Located in the northern outskirts of Nashville, the city of Madison, TN is a great option if you are searching for places to stay while exploring the region in your new 2023 Volkswagen Taos. Whether you are looking for scenic state parks, vibrant cities, or charming towns, here are three great day trips you can go on from Madison.

1. Downtown Nashville

Without a doubt, the city of Nashville is the most popular day trip destination among Madison locals, offering an excellent mix of culture, history, and entertainment. Founded in the late 1770s, Nashville has grown into the most populous city in the state of Tennessee largely as a result of its strategic location on the banks of the Cumberland River.

With most tourist attractions and local landmarks concentrated in the city center, Nashville is a relatively walkable city and a fantastic place to spend a day with your family or friends. Some of the spots you should not miss while exploring the Nashville downtown area include the Tennessee State Capitol, Printers Alley, the National Museum of African American Music, Cumberland Park, and The Parthenon at Centennial Park.

2. Knoxville

Established in 1786 as the first capital of Tennessee, Knoxville is another fantastic destination for a day trip, offering several historic landmarks, great museums, charming neighborhoods, and a booming gastronomic scene. Home to the main campus of the University of Texas, this city is located about 180 miles east of Madison and can be reached in about two hours and 40 minutes via route I-40.

Once you make your way to the city, you will find most attractions in the downtown area and the Old City neighborhood. Some of the places you should not miss include the Sunsphere at World’s Fair Park, Market Square, Ijams Nature Center, the Knoxville Museum of Art, the McClung Museum of Natural History & Culture, Charles Krutch Park, and the Museum of East Tennessee History.

3. Mammoth Cave National Park

If you are searching for some adventure away from the city, Mammoth Cave National Park is the place to be. Encompassing several portions of the longest known cave system in the entire world, this national park is located about 85 miles northeast of downtown Madison and can be reached in about one hour and 20 minutes by car via route I-65. Guided tours for visitors are offered by the National Park Service.
